FAQ (2025)

WHY BOUTIQUE STRING?

We are a family owned and operated, boutique yo-yo string company, homegrown in Idaho, USA. Our goal is to produce the most premium hand made strings to enhance your throwing experience. We believe that when you invest in a nice yo-yo, your string pairing should supercharge your joy and make you feel complete. We aim to provide a wide array of string blends and colorways to accommodate any style of yo-yo player, and we do it in a way that will always feel special and personal. Our strings range from having a familiar feel to being wildly fresh and exciting; from fun and upbeat to elegant and professional, we've tried to cover it all!

WHY SO EXPENSIVE?

The short answer is that these strings are not manufactured by machines, in factories - overseas, like the inexpensive strings that you may be referring to. We are a small, family owned business, and currently spin strings in small batches, on our humble spinning station. What we do is personal, and we put a great amount of time and love into it. We use unique materials, and our costs are not as low as manufacturers can obtain, and the same is true with our packaging expenses. You’ll also see that we give each order a bit of TLC , which you might not experience from large string manufacturers.

WHY NOT SELL IN BULK?

Since we produce our strings on a small spinning station, it’s really impossible to mass produce. To put it into perspective, spinning 150-200 strings, prepping, packaging, etc. would nearly take a full work day. Instead of selling in larger quantities to fewer people, we feel that it makes more sense for us to sell in smaller quantities to a larger number of people - really spread the love around! In addition, we work super hard to find unique materials that allow our strings to last longer than if we used ordinary thread. Our goal is to produce premium quality strings in 3pk and 5pk offerings that can far outlast a 10pk of factory made poly. But if factory made string is your thing, we teamed up with Sochi Co. to offer some of that too ;)

STRING TYPES, aka “BLENDS”

ZipLine Strings can be organized into the following string types and are often referred to as “blends”:

  • Poly Classic (100% polyester, original multi-type poly blend)
  • Polyesque (70/30 premium poly/plush nylon blend)
  • Nylon+ (various plush nylon blends)
  • Exotic Blends (cotton, micro string, etc.)
  • Signature (collaborations)

STRING THICKNESS

By today’s factory made string standards, most of our blends will land in the “fat” category, but we prefer to refer to them as our “standard” thickness.

The general thickness scale we use:

  • Lite (approximately normal/slim)
  • Standard (closest to fat)
  • Thick (fluffier than fat)

STRING LENGTH

Our original “poly classics” are 47" - unstretched and unlooped. However, most everything else is in the 50” range. After being in the string biz for a few years we were able to modify our setup and begin creating new formulas with a longer resting length. Our most recent blends max out our string rig and range from 50”-52”  (depending on the string type.) We are fully aware that these lengths might not serve those looking for extra long string. However, we’ve found that we’ve hit an average length that is still on par with quite a handful of string manufacturers, and these can easily get the job done for the vast majority of yoyo players.

BREAKING IN YOUR STRING

For most of our polyester and polyesque blends, they’ve been created with a low break-in time in mind. Those two blends types have a relatively “broken in” feel with fairly low elasticity. However, our nylon+ blends are a bit bouncier by comparison - especially our SkyLine III blend (due to being hand dyed & washed).

If you would like to reduce the bounciness of the string and thin it out, we recommend fully stretching your string.

  1. With the string already set up on the yoyo and fully extended (string on your throw finger and yoyo dangling above the ground), spin the yoyo clockwise - twisting the string tension super tight.
  2. With the string knot in one hand and the yoyo in the other, stretch the tightened string with all your might - much harder than you might be comfortable with. Don’t worry - it won’t break, lol!
  3. Neutralize the tension back to normal and remeasure your string - retying your string loop (if necessary). You’ll end up with a longer, thinner, less stretchy version of your string.
  4. Release this process as many times as needed to achieve your desired results.

FOR SLIPPERY FINGER LOOPS

When using any of our Polyesque or Nylon+ blends during cold winter months or if you have extra dry hands, you could experience a finger loop that feels more slippery than usual. We recommend either trying a double slip knot technique instead of a traditional finger loop (video coming soon), or trying our very own anti-slip string rosin, “LoopStick.”
